One-day roadtrip to Azpitia

Azpitia is a small town located in a valley, at just one and a half hours away from Lima downtown. Its main attraction is the beautiful view of the valley of the Mala river and the mountains around the town. Also, you can rent a quad bike and drive through a vineyard, ride a horse or a bike in the mountains.

How to get there?

Departing from Lima, the best route is to head south on the Panamericana Sur freeway until kilometer 80, then turn right on the exit to Azpitia. Head east for 10 minutes, you will see a bifurcation, follow the signs to Azpitia and take the right track. Here is where the unpaved road starts, so it would be better to go there in an SUV. However, if you do not mind the bumps and going slow, then a sedan would do just fine.

When to go?

I believe the best season to go is between December to late March, which is when the rain falls the most in the Andes. Therefore, the Mala river which passes by Azpitia is higher and the valley is greener. I went there last Sunday and even though there was almost no water running down the river, the view was amazing.

What to pack?

Apply sunscreen over your body, even though it is cloudy. I got a mild sunburn in Winter, so it could be worse when it is really hot. Also, bring a hat or a cap and sunglasses.

If you go there between December and April, then make sure you pack a mosquito repellent as well, otherwise you will get mosquito bites for sure.
